Description The primary areas of responsibility for this position are the Data Handling. On EarthCARE, this includes the On Board Computer, including the Remote Interface Unit and the Mass Memory and Formatting Unit, together with their application softwares. In addition the candidate will provide support to other subsytems engineers in the team with respect to units which contain embedded software. The candidate may be requested to assume the responsibility and perform activities for additional subsystems or systems as defined by the SOM or Division Head. Other areas of responsibility specific to EarthCARE are Validation, test and operation of the Mission Control System MCS Setup, validation, test and operation of the OBSM systems Validation and test of the Data Handling Subsystem of the Simulator Profile The candidate should have the following qualities Essential University or similar degree in engineering or physics. Spacecraft subsystem knowledge, preferably for Data Handling Experience in activities applicable to spacecraft operations Fluency in English, both in speech and writing Teamplayer Selfstarter, able to work independently with little supervision Desirable ECSS Packet Utilisation Standard knowledge Familiarity with the ESOC environment Familiarity with satellite control systems, in particular SCOS2000 Some experience dealing with external interfaces Familiarity with operational simulators, especially the ones based on SimSat Familiarity with low Earth orbit satellites The candidate should be able to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously. This position is based in Darmstadt, Germany and will start on the 1st of January 2014. Ground Stations Operations Engineer J2711 The Ground Stations play a key role in Space and Ground Segment operations, the Engineer will therefore be expected to acquire and maintain a Systemwide view of the Ground Segment, particularly in the areas of spacecraft TTC and payload data transfer. The Engineers shall divide hisher time and expertise, according to the workload, between the various programs to support the long term evolution and maintenance of the EUMETSAT Ground Stations. Responsibilities Duties The tasks of the Engineer will typically include Investigation and rectification of anomalies reported by the operationsmaintenance team Interface with the maintenance services providers at a technical level Reporting on the performance of the Ground Stations and associated systems together with a status report of any ongoing activities Attendance at the relevant coordination meetings to plan and schedule Ground Station activities ensuring compliance with Operational activities and constraints Provision of Ground Stations support to operations during critical mission phases, pre and post launch i.e. SVT, LEOP, IOT and contingency Maintenance of operational Ground Stations procedures, databases and documentation inaccordance with the configuration management and quality assurance practices Provision of technical support during the creation of maintenance agreements and contracts Assist with the preparation or evaluation of proposals for modificationsimprovements to the Ground Stations and associated equipment Planning and scheduling the implementation, testing and validation phases of any modifications improvements. The improvement in the quality of the data service is to be provided by a space based data relay system supporting data links between user spacecraft in low earth orbit LEO and user ground stations. In particular, the services offered by earth observation missions will be upgraded considerably since the EDRS will enable such missions to offer near real time access to data for example for disaster relief and security applications without being subject to geographical or weather constraints. Today space based data relay services are not offered on a commercial basis and are available only for institutional use to a few nations in the world. The EDRS will make space based data relay services available to European and Canadian space projects. The EDRS will use optical and Kaband technology to provide the data links to the user spacecraft.
