Herschel Science Operations Support Engineer

For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to support the continued development of the Herschel Science Data Processing system by designing, implementing, maintaining, testing and documenting data analysis modules written in Java and Jython on a Linux platform. This software is developed jointly between ESA, the three Herschel instrument teams and the NASA Herschel Science Center. ESA coordinates the overall development and provides the framework within which the instrument teams can develop and optimise instrumentspecific data reduction algorithms. The Herschel Data Processing System serves both as the basis to generate standard pipeline products and as tool to analyse Herschel data interactively. The Herschel Data Processing System is distributed to the astronomical community. The specific tasks beyond generalpurpose software development include Development and maintenance of the Herschel standard product generation and quality control framework. This framework is used for pipeline data processing for all Herschel data Graphical user interface GUI development and maintenance Development and maintenance of the Herschel Interactive Analysis system. This system is used by the astronomical community to exploit Herschel data in detail Development and maintenance of data structures, including accessing them locally and from object oriented and relational databases Development and maintenance of numerical libraries Setting up and providing access to webservices working in the VO context Writing and maintenance of documentation Provision and maintenance of test harnesses Support of the data processing technical assistants when running the operational environment to generate Herschel standard products Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a Masters degree in computer science, physics, electronic engineering, or equivalent, together with least five years relevant experience in professional software development and software engineering coding Java applications. You will require to have had experience interacting with instrument and calibration scientists and the scientific community. You will be working in both a team environment and independently, you must be focused to deadlines, with occasionally travel Good interpersonal and communication skills at all levels are required You will be comfortable in an international working environment and must be fluent in English, one of the official languages of ESA. Mission Control Operations Engineer

For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently seeking a Mission Control Operations Engineer required to operate EUMETSATs operational systems, with particular focus on mission control systems. The post is required for the routine operations phases of the MSG and EPS systems, and the preparation of future missions. Tasks As a member of the FLO Mission Control Systems team, the Engineer shall provide support to the development and operation of the MSG Ground Segment and the EPS Overall Ground System OGS. Main duties are the operation of the MSG Central Facility CF and the EPS Mission Control System MCS, and supporting operational use of Mission Control Facility MCF Tools and the mission controlrelated multimission tools. The role comprises a range of tasks including the provision of support to the routine operation of the MCS, and the interfaces between the MCS and other components of the EPS Core Ground Segment CGS. The Engineer will be responsible for the definition andor maintenance of the routine operations procedures pertaining to the operation of the MCS and these interfaces, in accordance with the established EUMETSAT Operations Department configuration management and quality assurance practices. In addition, heshe will acquire and maintain a Systemwide view of the MSG System, and the EPS CGS and OGS, particularly in the areas of system monitoring control and data flows, due to the central role the CF and MCS play in the MSG and EPS Systems. The Engineer will review any planned changes to the system configuration and the investigation of anomalies encountered through the routine operation of the CF and MCS. They will provide oncall support as part of a team of MCS engineers. The Engineer will provide support to the development and operations preparation for recurrent satellites in existing operational programs, and for future operational programs now in development. The Key Person will perform the following tasks Support to routine operations Definition and maintenance of missioncontrol operations procedures, including System and ground segment procedures and operations guides Liaison with the spacecraft operations team to ensure the continuity and optimisation of spacecraft monitoring and control activities Liaison with the operations analysts to ensure continuity and optimisation of database related activities Interface with other facilities within the operational ground segments to ensure the continuity and optimisation of ground segment and mission monitoring and control activities Interface with external elements of the operational Ground Segments to ensure the continuity and optimisation of data exchanges with the mission control systems Interface with the mission control systems maintenance team and industry representatives to ensure optimised performance, including participating in the definition and implementation of any changes Provision of support to operational ground segment analyses Provision of standbyoncall support as part of a team of MCS engineers Provision of support, as required, to critical operations Processing of system anomalies, their documentation, investigation, classification and resolutionmitigation, including participation in Anomaly Review Boards Participation in further technical meetings, formal reviews, as well as scheduling and planning meetings. Support to modifications to the operational systems Interface with project teams on the implementation of system upgrades to support major operations projects, including System MidTerm Evolution Plan, recurrent satellites, and any System hardware and operating system obsolescence upgrade Processing of system modifications, including their documentation, approval, and implementation, including participation in Change Review Boards Support to, and participation in, the functional verification and operational validation of mission control systems and related elements, both standalone and in the context of an overall ground segment. Support to the preparations for recurrent satellites and future satellite programs Provision of support to the development and operations preparation for recurrent satellites in existing operational programmes such as MetopC and MSG4 Provision of support to the development and operations preparation for future operational programmes such as Sentinel3, MTG and EPSSG. Support to operations teams Provision of training, through written materials, practical demonstrations and presentations, to other members of the Operations Team. The tasks assigned to the Engineer will be agreed through dedicated workpackages with clear identification of activities and outputs expected. In the performance of these tasks, the Engineer shall apply the EUMETSAT configuration and change control procedures as well as the relevant system engineering standards, quality management procedures and maintenance procedures. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a university degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline. Metop Spacecraft Operations Engineer
