A vacancy for a Composites Engineer Materials Processes has arisen within Airbus Defence Space to work on the ExoMars Rover project in Stevenage. You will provide materials, mechanical parts and processes engineering support to product development and to business unit projects as required. You will also contribute to the Materials and Processes team mission of assuring the quality of materials and processes used in Airbus Defence and Space products. The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Your main tasks and responsibilities will include Acting as the responsible materials engineer for one or more projectproduct teams, as necessary acting as the single contact point for the resolution of all materials and processes issues. To satisfy internal customers projects, product teams, manufacturing, AIT, procurement, design office, PA. through the application of specialist materials and processes knowledge. To assure performance of planned activities, on time and with respect to the governing product assurance requirements. To instigate and manage to completion materials and processes selection, development, evaluation and qualification programmes. To participate in risk reviews at all stages of product design, development and manufacture, ensuring that materials and processes risk retirement plans are carried through. To prepare declared materials and processes lists and ensure that adequate materials and processes qualification has been achieved by CDR. To review and approve subcontractorsupplier materials and processes documentation. To monitor the technical performance of subcontractors and suppliers and participate in audits. We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience Degree in a Chemistry or Materials discipline with experience within the Space or Aerospace industry. Proven experience in Composites and Nonmetallic Materials. Good understanding of Thermoset and Thermoplastic polymer materials. Experience of Mechanical and Thermal testing of materials. Experience of variety of Carbon fibre reinforcements and other fibres such as Kevlar, glass, would be desirable. Knowledge of Lightweight structures in extreme environments. Knowledge of processing Composites Prepregs, filament winding, RTM. Knowledge of secondary operations adhesive bonding, insert potting. Surface analytical techniques SEM, EDAX, XPS, etc. Characterisation of materials DSC, DMA, TMA, etc. Chemical analysis FTIR, MSGC, ICP. Summary An experienced and knowledgeable Materials Engineer is required to support ESA onsite at ESTEC. Objective To support project reviews for materials process approval including safety reviews for use on launchers and spacecraft. Responsibilities Duties Specific tasks will include but will not be limited to Evaluation of nonmetallic materials such as polymers incl. adhesives and coatings, ceramics and composite materials for use on launchers as well as spacecraft Performing general failure analysis of materials and assemblies including resolution of internalexternal NCRs Non Conformance Reports of testing and evaluation activities Using various laboratory tools such as optical and electron, microscopy, spectroscopy, surface analysis instruments to analyse materials and processes behaviour Carrying out testing analysis of relevant lab investigations in an ISO 17025 compliant manner including procedure and documentation development Surface modification and analysis due to space environmental effects like atomic oxygen UVVUV and plasma effects. Analyse the behaviour of materials and their resistance to the space environment. Performing space environmental simulation to assess effects on materials Providing expert support for materials and process reviews as requested by formal reviews of space missions Producing clear and professional reports as specified for the task Supporting the inclusion of results in internal databases Interaction with internal and external customers on a professional level Qualifications Experience PhD or Master degree in materials science, materials physicschemistry or a related field. Good familiarity with advanced surface analysis techniques XPS, AFM, Raman, TOFSIMS, SEM EDXWDX, FIB A strong background on other advanced materials characterization techniques with specific emphasis in thermal analysis techniques. Some experience on carrying out RD studies to understand behaviour of materials under extreme environments such as space. Familiarity and understanding of ESA PA requirements ECSS as well as ISO17025 requirements. Qualities The engineer must be willing operate in a team environment.
