Satellite Instrument Data Processing Engineer

This is a permanent position, calling for experience of realtime satellite instrument data processing. You will be placed on assignment based near Frankfurt in Germany for several years. Candidates should ideally be available to start in October 2015. Our client is responsible for establishing and operating weather forecasting and Earth observation satellite programmes with associated data telemetry and dissemination operations. Vast quantities of data are produced and user communities throughout the world are able to access both current and historical data sets. The demanding realtime environment places much emphasis on adherence to quality and configuration management standards and procedures. The main working language is English and fluency in English is essential. The role will embrace Data ingestion, processing and product distribution Data and product analysis Testing and implementation of new products Settingup and implementation of operational procedures and documentation Anomaly investigation First line maintenance Coordination with external organisations and service providers Attendance at technical meetings Participation in formal reviews The key experience and attributes sought are At least 3 years experience in operations of realtime satellite instrument data processing systems Experience of instrument data processing of Level0 data and generation of meteorological or environmental products Experience in near real time data driven automated systems in large computer networks Experience of validating complex remote sensing data processing systems Experience with UNIXLinux operating systems Knowledge of some of the following would be advantageous Imaging and sounding instrumentation for remote sensing spacecraft Development and maintenance of operational procedures and configuration data Programming languages e.g. C, C and IDL Scripting languages and databases e.g. Perl, Python, shell, Oracle Spacecraft andor ground segment operations Communication protocols TCPIIP, MBSS Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems CCSDS formats Knowledge of geophysical remote sensing data processing, e.g. Image Navigation and Registration INR, radiometric correction, calibration algorithms and retrieval of geophysical parameters Candidates should possess a University degree or equivalent. Tasks The Space Division seeks a versatile, knowledgeable and experienced senior software or systems engineer for its spacecraft ground segment activities. The successful candidate will become part of the successful Ground Segment operations group with the responsibility for supporting the overall specification, design, deployment and acceptance of spacecraft ground software systems. The first assignment involves performing a customer facing onsite role for the Galileo mission and will interface with all levels of the project from the end customers, users and subcontractors. The role involves Taking responsibility for key elements of the system, implemented and delivered by a subcontractor Maintaining the requirements baseline for those elements Ensuring design and implementation meet the requirements Analysispreparation of change requests and processing of subcontractor change responses Review of documentation datapacks including, design, test plans, test reports, user manuals etc. Attendance of acceptance campaigns both at the subcontractor site and end user sites Analysis and disposition of Software Problem Reports Technical support to provide input to customer documentationdatapacks Interfacing with the customer and users to discuss problems and changes as needed Essential skills The successful candidate will have a software engineering background and be able to demonstrate a thorough systems engineering approach from requirements through design and verification of delivered and accepted systems. The project standards must be adhered to and therefore an understanding of good software standards are required and an ability to work within project guidelines. The role will be customer facing, so the candidate must be fluent in English and confident in their role representing the company and interfacing with the customer and operators. The Space Division seeks a versatile, enthusiastic and knowledgeable engineer to be part of the team responsible for the Assembly, Integration and Validation AIV activities for two ground control segment elements of the Galileo satellite constellation. The first assignment involves performing a customer facing onsite role for the Galileo mission. The OPF is the Operations Preparation Facility which is the element responsible for providing an environment to the satellite operators for developing and maintaining operations configuration data, including spacecraft databases, procedures, planning and flight dynamics databases. The SCPF is the Spacecraft Constellation Planning Facility which is the element responsible for scheduling contacts between for the constellation of satellites and the ground stations. The job will be based across a number of sites in Europe to provide full time support of AIV activities. The role involves working both independently and as part of a team to perform Installation of software on the target environment Preparationdevelopment of test procedures Supporting acceptance campaigns including the execution of test procedures Reporting and writing all AIV documentation related to SCPF and OPF Analysing anomalies, providing the first line of investigation Providing support to users and support for operations Essential skills The successful candidate will have a software engineering background with experience in AIV activities. Experience with writing and executing tests is essential. The project standards must be adhered to and therefore an understanding of good software standards are required and an ability to work within project guidelines. The role will be customer facing, so the candidate must be fluent in English and confident in their role representing the company and interfacing with the customer and operators. As the role will include support in several European countries the candidate must be eligible to work across Europe and have a willingness to travel regularly. It will be necessary to obtain Security Clearance for some aspects of the project. Desirable skills Linux The software is predominantly a Linux based solution, so an understanding of the Linux command interface would be useful, together with scripting knowledge e.g. perl and shell scripts. Requirements Engineering Tests will predominantly be for requirements verification, so an understanding of requirements engineering Languages As the role will include travel to Germany and Italy, a conversational ability in those languages may be beneficial, although not essential. Having prior experience of the Galileo mission is not a prerequisite for this position but can be an advantage. As part of the Ground Systems Centre of Competence of the Space Systems business line of Airbus Defence and Space, the Customer Maintenance and Support department is in charge of corrective maintenance, progressive maintenance, customer support and operational support for the Observation Satellite User Ground Segments SPOT67, SSOT, THEOS, PDGSSENTINEL1, FORMOSAT, HELIOS II, PHAROS, PLEIADES, etc..The objective of the Customer finalising the workaround solutions necessary to ensure missions in degraded cases.
