Netflix app installed on 1.7 mln Dutch smartphones

(Telecompaper) Over 1.7 million Dutch consumers have the Netflix app installed on their smartphones, making the app as popular as that of the Dutch public broadcaster NPO, according to the November edition of Telecompaper's Dutch Apps Market rapport. Among video apps, only YouTube is more popular in the Netherlands, with around 6 million Dutch consumers having the app on their phones. YouTube is helped by the fact that it comes installed standard on almost all Android smartphones. The RTL XL app and Horizon Go app from cable operator Ziggo were also in the top-5 video apps in the Netherlands.

Comtech to acquire TCS for USD 430.8 mln in cash

(Telecompaper) Comtech has agreed to acquire TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) for USD 5.00 per share in cash, or a total of USD 430.8 million. The price represents a premium of 13.9 percent compared to the last closing trading price of TCS shares and 35.1 percent over the last closing trading price one day after TCS's announcement in July that it had formed a special committee to explore strategic alternatives to enhance stockholder value. The deal was unanimously approved by the board of directors of both companies.
MTS to sell Allstream to Zayo for CAD 465 mln

(Telecompaper) Manitoba Telecom Services announced a binding agreement to sell its unit Allstream to Zayo Group for CAD 465 million cash. MTS said the transaction will bring it a stronger position to transform into a more customer-first business, leveraging its assets and position to deliver solid results in a competitive market. After closing costs, MTS expects to realise net proceeds of approximately CAD 425 million. The company said it will evaluate a number of capital allocation options available to it, including the retirement of debt incurred to fund its pension funding prepayment made earlier in 2015 and recent spectrum acquisitions.
5G mobile subscriptions to reach 150 mln by 2021

(Telecompaper) 5G mobile subscriptions are forecast to reach 150 million by 2021, according to a report by Ericsson. ICT could enable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the current carbon footprint of the US and EU combined by 2030, the same study said. South Korea, Japan, China and the US are predicted to lead with the first, and fastest, 5G subscription uptake. 5G will connect new types of devices, enabling new use cases related to the Internet of Things (IoT). the transition will open up new industries and verticals to ICT transformation, the study said. Researchers noted a significant increase in mobile video consumption, which is driving around six times higher traffic volumes per smartphone in North America and Europe for the 2015 to 2021 period.

Fossil Group buys Misfit for USD 260 mln

(Telecompaper) The Fossil Group has agreed to acquire Misfit, a maker of wearable and smart home products, for USD 260 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. The Fossil Group said it will start integrating Misfit technology into products resembling traditional watches as early as next year. Sonny Vu, the CEO and co-founder of Misfit, will become the president and CTO of connected devices for the Fossil Group when the deal completes, expected before the end of the year.
