The Position We are looking for someone with an excellent knowledge of Satellite Mission Planning Systems concepts and software. The main responsibility is to build a section that offers a long term perspective for the staff and a sustainable and growing business for the company! As a section head you will both manage the section and participate on project activities as well, the allocation being flexible depending on the required focus. The management activity have two distinct themes Strategy and Planning. You formulate the vision and strategy with your team, inline with the direction of the company. The strategy is thereafter translated into a plan of specific actions to be taken and you manage your teams execution of this plan. The aim is long term sustainability for the business. Delivery and Team. You are responsible for the deliveries of the projects within your section. This includes resource planning both allocation and recruitment, monitoring of projects and being the supervisor of the section team. You are part of the department management team, supporting the daily operations and you will be involved on required changes and improvements. The direct line of reporting will be to the Division Head, but you are encouraged to contribute to all parts of the organization. The section size is measured in number of staff and should be between 5 and 15. The ultimate measure of your success will be that the section will grow to a size where it will have to be split! Microwave Instrument Systems Engineer EUMETSAT is Europes meteorological satellite agency monitoring the weather and climate from space 24 hours a day, 365 days a year As a Microwave Instrument Systems Engineer, this is your chance to contribute to a world leading earth observation programme, set to generate global weather forecasting and climate monitoring benefits for many years to come. This role is rooted in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society! BACKGROUND The EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation EPSSG will secure the continuation of meteorological observations from the midmorning polar orbit over a period of 21 years, starting in 202425, based on three successive pairs of MetopSG AB satellites. EPSSG will bring observations to a new standard, through the suite of innovative European instruments flown on the MetopSG spacecraft. These include Microwave Sounder MWS, Microwave Imager MWI and Ice Cloud Imager ICI instruments. In parallel, phaseA activities for a potential expansion of EPSSG are running and include the development of small satellites equipped with small microwave sounders which are envisaged to complement the EPSSG microwave sounding mission. Reporting to the EPSSG Instrument Systems Manager, the Microwave Instrument Engineer will support the activities linked to the ESAled development of the MWS instrument, as well as supporting activities linked to the development of new small microwave sounders in the frame of prospective LEO missions. Heshe will acquire, maintain and share inhouse knowledge on instrument design, performances and operations aspects. As a member of the Instrument Team and together with instrument scientists, system, ground segment and operations preparation engineers, the post holder will also be involved in the development, operations preparation and commissioning of the endtoend of microwave instruments chains covering all functions from instrument commanding to delivery of products to users. DUTIES Provide technical support for the MWS instruments project teams to ensure daily coordination of information related to design, test results, expected performances and operations of these instruments Follow the assembly, integration and testing of MWS on the MetopSG satellites carried out under ESA responsibility Analyse and assess results of microwave radiometer testing and qualification including any nonconformances and identify issues having potential implications for the design, development, performances, operations and commissioning of endtoend instrument chains Follow the development of the radiometers Level 1 processing algorithms associated ground prototype processors and instrument data simulators, and assess their consistency with the instrument development and their suitability to support the development of operational Level 1 processing chains Support the operations preparation and commissioning of microwave radiometers endtoend instrument chains in cooperation with ESA, focusing on instrument operability and performance validation Maintain and share relevant information and knowledge within EUMETSAT on the microwave radiometers Support activities related to the prospective activities with regard to future microwave passive radiometer missions.
