ExoMars Spacecraft Operations Engineer Platform Subsystem PowerThermal

This is a regular opportunity for experienced Engineers to work in the domain of satellite operations operations preparations in our premises in Darmstadt. This position is part of a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service to be provided to the Solar and Planetary Missions Division, with initial assignment to the ExoMars mission. This is a permanent position to work 100 on customer side in ESOC. The position should start 1st of January 2015 and the submission deadline for applicants will be the 8st of September 2014 RESPONSIBILITIESDUTIES Initially, the main areas of responsibility for this service are platform subsystems power, thermal preparation, validation and maintenance of the Mission Planning System, the ExoMars mission planning rules and constraints and defining the interface between MPS and other ground segment facilities The service provider may be requested to assume the responsibility and perform activities for additional subsystems or systems within the scope of general SOE services. QUALIFICATIONSEXPERIENCE A degree qualified engineer with experience in Spacecraft Operations to join the existing Telespazio VEGA operations team at ESOC. For our activities in ESOC, we are currently seeking a specialist to cover a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service to be provided for astronomy and fundamental physics missions operated by ESOC. The service will be delivered to XMMNewton INTEGRAL primarily in the first instance, but with the possibility of supporting other missions within the Astronomy and Fundamental Physics Missions Division at a later stage of the service provision. The primary areas of responsibility for this service are to support the Spacecraft Operations Managers in the development of operations procedures for onboard thermal control of platform and instruments, deorbiting, mission control system and simulator migration and automation activities. The key person is required to familiarise himself with the missions he is supporting and in particular with the procedures, ground segment and its tools that are needed to perform the mission operations. Tasks Among other tasks, the candidate may be required to familiarise himherself with the platform in order to be able to write mission operations procedures for the power and thermal subsystems mainly and payload support the development of mission operations automation tools software andor shell scripts interfacing the different components of the ground control systems MCS, simulator etc. support the mission team during operating systems migrations work and be on call as operations engineer supervising operations conduction one week every 56 weeks approx. write and maintain operational procedures in MOIS and reports monitor and control spacecraft operations participate in the relevant technical meetings and teleconferences. Qualifications and Requirements The key person will need to fulfil the following requirements Essential Experience with spacecraft operations Knowledge of spacecraft subsystems and operations, preferably OBDH, PowerThermal, payload Experience with SCOS MCS The key personnel will work in the role of SOE on the XMM Integral missions and as such is required to have the basic qualifications for a SOE position Experience with Procedure writing Experience with Operational simulators Experience with Operational databases Experience with Mission Planning In addition, the candidate shall be assertive, communicative and able to work in a team in a multinational environment. A good knowledge of the English language is mandatory. LEO Spacecraft Operations Engineer Consultant Support

The Key person shall work in the Operations and Services to Users Department as a member of the Metop Spacecraft Operations Team. The key person shall be assigned and trained to provide operations expertise and support to one or more platform subsystems and or payload instruments, depending on his or her experience and the overall team needs. The key person shall also participate in coordinating the satellite operations activities of other team members and external teams responsible for onboard software management, simulator support, mission control, mission planning, flight dynamics and ground stations. Furthermore, the key person shall support system and operations preparation activities for MetopC, for Metop Second Generation satellites and possibly also for Sentinel3 and Jason CS. The key person shall be required to support operations during normal working hours, as well as support the oncall operations engineer rota, such that safe and efficient operations are ensured by the Spacecraft Operations Team on a 247 basis. TASKS Support to the routine operations of Metop A, B and preparing for MetopC, comprising Provision of operational expertise to one or more platform subsystems andor payload instruments andor onboard software management, satellite simulator and ground segment operations interfaces. Maintain the corresponding operations documentation and flight procedures, including the update and operational validation of procedures releases in a configuration controlled environment Perform trending and performance analysis on the corresponding subsystems and instruments, including definition and possibly prototyping of additional analysis checks where necessary Investigations into satellite anomalies. This may require a close cooperation with the Operations Support Entity in ESTEC and Industry Support the coordination of partner agency interactions for relevant subsystemsinstruments Participation in the satellite oncall support rota Identification and support to implementation of system and process improvements concerning the Metop Spacecraft Operations Team responsibilities and interfaces. Support to the system and operations preparation of Metop Second Generation satellites Provide inputs and or review the definition of system and satellite operational concepts Review space to ground interface specifications and flight operations manuals Support the definition of tools and processes required to prepare for and operate the satellites. Support to the system and operations preparation of other LEO satellites Provide operations preparation support as required to the Sentinel3 and Jason CS developments. PROFILE In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key person shall have a demonstrated experience in at least two of the following Spacecraft monitor and control operations Spacecraft operations preparation engineering Low Earth Orbit spacecraft design or Assembly Integration and Test activities at system or subsystem level. Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the Key person to have experience with some of the following Inorbit operations of Low Earth Orbit Earth Observation satellites Experience in the operation or development of satellite ground segment facilities, in particular procedure development, monitor and control, mission planning, onboard software management, performance analysis, configuration management and simulator facilities The procedure development tool MOIS and the procedure execution language STOL The mission control systems EPOCH or SCOS Specification of system and operational concepts, facility requirements Familiarity with OnBoard Control Procedure and OnBoard Position Scheduler concepts Familiarity with the ECSS Packet Utilisation Standard, customisation and usage Familiarity with system change control and configuration management procedures Data analysis software packages such as MATLAB File parsing languages such as PERL, AWK Use of VBA for development of adhoc tools in MS Office applications. The candidate should be selfmotivated and able to work in an organised and efficient manner with minimum supervision. Strong data analysis, processing and synthesis skills are essential and an ability to recognise opportunities for improvements in areas of work and implement appropriate solutions is highly desirable.
