Spacecraft Operations Engineer LISA Pathfinder mf The Mission LISA Pathfinder is an ESA space mission that will test certain technologies required for the subsequent joint ESANASA Laser Interferometer Space Antenna LISA mission which cannot be proven on Earth due to the planets gravity, including Demonstrating that a test mass can be put in pure gravitational freefall Demonstrating laser interferometry with a freefalling mirror Assessing the reliability of microNewton thrusters, lasers and optics in a space environment LISA Pathfinder operations will be performed at ESAESOC in Darmstadt, Germany. More information on the LISA Pathfinder mission can be found here httpwww.esa.intOurActivitiesOperationsLISAPathfinder The Challenge We are looking for a skilled Spacecraft Operations Engineer to be part of the team providing spacecraft operations engineering services primarily assigned to the LISA Pathfinder mission, but with the possibility of supporting other missions within the Astronomical Missions Division at ESOC. The tasks to be performed are those typical for a spacecraft operations engineer, but with a focus on flight procedure validation, mission planning and payload operations. The initial focus for this position is to provide independent validation of the Flight Operations Procedures FOP. The validation is conducted on the LISA Pathfinder mission control system and using the operational simulator. The validation will therefore include the end to end ground systems. Following procedure validation, the main activity areas will be payload operations preparation, validation and execution, including mission planning and spacecraft commissioning plan and timeline. More general spacecraft operations engineering activities are expected during the LEOP preparation and execution, when the payloads are not active. It is currently planned that LISA Pathfinder will launched in the 2nd half of 2015, with commissioning completed by end of 2015. The spacecraft is planned to be decommissioned one year after launch. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date later in 2014. Your Qualifications This position requires a person with University degree or similar in engineering, physics or related subject. Specific requirements for the position Essential skills are Spacecraft knowledge on a subsystem level, particular of payloads Experience in operational environments Understanding and ability to accurately predict behaviour of complex systems Knowledge and understanding of control theory Fluent written and spoken English Ability to prioritise and manage several activities in parallel, and across multidomains Familiarity with operational training Familiarity with operational simulators, ideally based on ESAs SIMSAT Familiarity with satellite control systems, ideally based on ESAs SCOS2000 Familiarity with operational spacecraft payloads Desirable skills are Familiarity with flight dynamics, orbit and attitude Knowledge of satellite or ground operations, or nonspace operational environments Experience with prelaunch activities and launch campaigns of satellites Mission planning expertise Power and thermal expertise This position is located at ESOC in Darmstadt. Working time is normal office hours, with possible oncall support outside normal working hours after LISA Pathfinder launch. Occasional travel within Europe may be required. Spacecraft Operations Engineer ExoMars TTC, communications, Mars data relay operations mf The Mission ExoMars is the European mission to characterise the biological and geochemical environment on Mars in preparation for future robotic missions and human exploration. The mission foresees an ESA provided orbiter in 2016 and a Rover in 2018. The Orbiter will be launched in 2016. Following a 9 months cruise it will go into Mars Orbit and perform an initial orbital science phase for one Martian year. Subsequently the orbiter will be the prime source for relay communications for the 2018 Rover and following missions. The Rover Mission will be launched in 2018, transported and deployed to the surface of Mars by NASA provided assets. The Orbiter will be operated from ESOC in Darmstadt, while the Rover will be operated by remote centres under ESAs responsibility. ESOC will also be responsible for the overall mission coordination and communications. The spacecraft control system will be based on SCOS2000 with the support from the ESA and NASA deep space ground station network. JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks This SoW is covering a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service to the Solar and Planetary Missions Division, with initial assignment to the ExoMars 2016 Mission.
