JOB DESCRIPTION Responsibilities Duties Tasks This SoW is covering a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service to the Solar and Planetary Missions Division, with initial assignment to the ExoMars 2016 Mission. Initially, the main areas of responsibility for this service are platform subsystems power, thermal preparation, validation and maintenance of the Mission Planning System, the ExoMars mission planning rules and constraints and defining the interface between MPS and other ground segment facilities The service provider may be requested to assume the responsibility and perform activities for additional subsystems or systems within the scope of general SOE services. Qualifications University degree in the domain of engineering, physics or equivalent. Required knowledge Previous experience in spacecraft platform subsystem operations Operational experience with interplanetary missions Understanding of Flight Control Team tasks and responsibilities pre and postlaunch Fluency in English, both in speech and writing Ability to coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields. Ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Strong educational background in engineering or science Handson experience with ground systems and facilities required to support spacecraft operations Familiarity with the ESOC environment Operational experience with Power and Thermal subsystems Previous experience with mission planning processes The ability to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously. The key person shall also participate in coordinating the satellite operations activities of other team members and external teams responsible for onboard software management, simulator support, mission control, mission planning, flight dynamics and ground stations. Furthermore, the key person shall support system and operations preparation activities for MetopC, for Metop Second Generation satellites and possibly also for Sentinel3 and JasonCS. The key person shall be required to support operations during normal working hours, as well as support the oncall operations engineer rota, such that safe and efficient operations are ensured by the Spacecraft Operations Team on a 247 basis. The tasks of the Key person will typically include Support to the routine operations of Metop A, B and preparing for MetopC, comprising o Provision of operational expertise to one or more platform subsystems andor payload instruments andor onboard software management, satellite simulator and ground segment operations interfaces. o Maintain the corresponding operations documentation and flight procedures, including the update and operational validation of procedures releases in a configuration controlled environment o Perform trending and performance analysis on the corresponding subsystems and instruments, including definition and possibly prototyping of additional analysis checks where necessary o Investigations into satellite anomalies. This may require a close cooperation with the Operations Support Entity in ESTEC and Industry o Support the coordination of partner agency interactions for relevant subsystemsinstruments o Participation in the satellite oncall support rota o Identification and support to implementation of system and process improvements concerning the Metop Spacecraft Operations Team responsibilities and interfaces. Spacecraft Operations Engineer XMM INTEGRAL mf The Mission ESA operates two observatory missions, XMMNewton and INTEGRAL, from its operation centre, ESOC, in Darmstadt, Germany. The XMMNewton mission is an ESA Science mission that provides observations of Xray objects such as black holes, neutron stars or active galactic nuclei. XMM was launched in 1999 and is planned to be operated at least until at least the end of 2016. INTEGRAL is ESAs gamma ray observatory, which can simultaneously observe objects in gamma rays, Xrays and visible light. Its principal targets are violent explosions producing gammaray bursts, powerful phenomena such as supernova explosions, and regions in the Universe thought to contain black holes. INTEGRAL was launched in 2002. The INTEGRAL and XMM flight control teams are partially merged, so that in addition to their prime responsibilities, members of each team provide backup and oncall support for both missions. The Challenge We are looking for a skilled Spacecraft Operations Engineer to primarily support the XMMNewton and INTEGRAL mission operations at ESOC in Darmstadt. The primary areas of responsibility are to support the Spacecraft Operations Managers in the development of operations procedures for onboard thermal control of the platforms and instruments, deorbiting operations preparation, mission control system and simulator migration, and activities related to operations automation.
