Future Missions Technology Development Engineer

RHEA is currently recruiting a Future Missions Technology Development Engineer to support Earth Observation Division at our clients premises in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. The divisions role is to prepare new Earth observation EO missions and technologies. The work includes the coordination of technology activities performed within ESA and the relevant technology requirements derived from the new concepts proposed for EO missions. This includes contributions to the definition, evaluation and followup of technology developments and their implication in terms of system performance. Additionally, phase 0 and phase A studies of new Earth Science and Earth Application missions are conducted in the Division. The Technology Coordination Section is responsible for the identification of technology requirements for future Earth Observation missions and contributes to the establishment of the EO strategy for technology development. A solid collaboration with the other divisions in the EO directorate and ESAs technical directorate is essential for this work. The nature of the work requires wide spectrum knowledge in engineering physics with a natural inclination for learning and understanding new technologies. Tasks and Activities The scope of work will include Supporting the identification of the technology requirements for future Earth observations missions. Providing support to technology developments for future Earth Observation missions, that are conducted in the technology coordination section Supporting ESAs technology harmonisation process Supporting missions under preparation through participation to reviews, assessment of industrial results Maintaining and improving the Earth Observation technology database Providing support to technology developments within the new and prospective ESA member states Poland, Romania, Hungary, Estonia and PECS countries Skills and Experience The following skills and experience are mandatory University degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification At least 4 years of experience in Earth Observation engineering. Solid knowledge of techniques used in Earth Observation missions Solid background in satellite system and subsystem technologies Proficient in the English language Spoken and Written. Engineering Support to EOP on Cold Atom Interferometry for Future Missions

For one of our main customers ESAESTEC, we are currently looking for an Engineering Support to EOP Earth Observation Programme on Cold Atom Interferometry CAI for Future Missions to work in the Science, Applications and Future Technologies Department of ESA EOP Directorate. The role of the Future Missions Division EOPSF is to prepare the Earth observation EO missions and technologies of the future. The work carried out is mainly related to the endtoend definition of space missions, including orbits, instruments, platforms, endtoend performance, data flow, launcher interfaces, and ground processing to meet the observation requirements. Tasks and Responsibilities The contractor shall give support to EOP Future Missions Division to follow the developments in the above activities and parallel studies, which consist of the following Review TNs and actively participate to progress meetings related to ongoing CAI activities 3 ongoing1 starting mid2015 Support elaboration of Statement of Works for future CAI activities Investigate and propose parallel studies on CAI technology for space applications Perform internal studies to assess the results of external activities on CAI, including to define and maintain CAI systemlevel budgets and to perform performance studies. Support to monitoring EOP CAI studies The Contractor shall perform internal studies to assess the results of external activities on CAI, including to define and maintain CAI systemlevel budgets and to perform performance studies. Preparation on next activities planned. Up to present, four activities are planned for the realization of the CAI gradiometer. These will follow the ongoing activities at their completion. The Contractor shall contribute to the elaboration of the Statement of Works. The contractor will then support the monitoring of the execution of the activities. Investigation in CAI technology for space application. The Contractor shall investigate other applications of CAI for EOP purposes, implementing other concepts than gravity gradiometer. He shall support interactions with other ESA departments e.g. TECMM and SRES, national agencies and space industry in order to propose more reliable and compact CAI technology. Experience and Education The profile for the person to provide services considered for this vacancy is a research engineer with the following skills Relevant Academic background with University degree in engineering and a minimum of 4 years working experience in the field Good communication and technical writing skills Good organisation skills Methodical and proactive Good general knowledge of ESA EOP missions, and in particular of future gravity missions based on CAI technology Strong and demonstrated background in CAI technology, and in particular in laser systems and quantum sensors, and in its applications to space Experience of daytoday contact with international experts and partners in the field. Engineering Support on Cold Atom Interferometry for Future Missions at ESTEC

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support to ESA in the domain of Earth Observation. Overview The candidate shall provide engineering support within the Future Missions Division EOPSF of ESAs EOP Directorate. Previous EO missions such as GRACE, CHAMP and GOCE have successfully made precise gravity field measurements and improved our knowledge of the geoid, but future followon mission concepts such as GRACE 2 or ESAs Next Generation Gravity Mission are pushing electrostatic gravity gradiometers to their performance limits. Atomic quantum sensors have the potential to drastically increase the performance of inertial measurements. Recent lab results show that it is possible to build a reliable system for the use of atom interferometry on vehicles and for space applications. Cold Atom Interferometry CAI will enable the realization of inertial and gravity sensing payloads with unprecedented sensitivity. A series of CAI studies whose elements are very much interrelated has been planned along a roadmap. In parallel to this, small activities more related to CAI technology have been implemented, particularly to exploit the combination of different kind of accelerometers. The provision of this support will follow the developments in the above activities and parallel studies, and in general the tasks include Reviewing Technical Notes TNs and related documents, and actively participate to progress meetings related to ongoing CAI activities 3 ongoing1 starting mid2015, Supporting elaboration of SoWs for future CAI activities, and subsequent support to the monitoring of the execution of these activities including review of TNs and related documents, Investigating and proposing parallel studies on CAI technology for space applications, supporting interactions with other ESA departments e.g. TECMM and SRES, national agencies and space industry in order to propose more reliable and compact CAI technology, Performing internal studies to assess the results of external activities on CAI, including to define and maintain CAI systemlevel budgets and to perform performance studies. The work in general requires a systemoriented perspective where the needs of the users and the technical and cost constraints have to be balanced so as to provide overall architectural analyses and finally detailed system and element designs that support credible estimates of performance, cost and schedule. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in The Netherlands Applicants are required to provide a copy of their passport and degree certificate. Aurora will validate the Degree with the issuing University and provide evidence to ESA. Location The work will be performed at the European Space Technology and Research Centre ESTEC at Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Contract The selected candidate will receive good remuneration. Will be registered for both social security and tax in the Netherlands. The standard working hours are 40 per week. There are 12 public holidays and an additional 30 annual days holiday.
