Job description For our customer, ESA in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Advanced Mission Concepts and Technologies Manager. Your area of responsibilities will be related to facilitating the introduction of innovative operations concepts and associated functions and performance with enabling new technologies. The main objective is to identify, prototype and validate solutions and applications based on suitable advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics and getting ready for future ESA missions with efficient and effective technologies for operations. You shall address challenging requirements derived from the input of flight and ground control engineers current ongoing missions improvement requests, lessons learnt prephase A and phase A activities future missions and long term visions You shall make use of current ESOC controlled space missions as a noninvasive testbed for preoperational validation. Software applications apps, tools and associated services may be derived, implemented and maintained from successful prototypes. The current strategic roadmap follows two major threads Data Analytics, Advanced Planning Scheduling, With the common goals of Enabling increased level of operations autonomy, Reducing operations costs, Increasing space mission operations return products or services, Mitigating operations risks, Validating new operations workflows. The innovation process covers typically spacecraft and ground control operational tasks such as planning and scheduling, monitoring, healthcare and diagnosis, resources management, spacecraft dynamic behaviour modelling, spacecraft safety management, remote alarming, operations automation and autonomy. Studies, carried out as external or internal projects, address the innovation and modernization of operational tasks. Responsibilities Typical activities to be undertaken are New Software Technology research work on new software technology, including the following tasks Elicitation and analysis of needs and requirements from current missions and future missions, Identification and analysis of innovative evolutionary and disruptive technologies, Uptodate upkeep of knowledge of technologies, Maintenance of a technology roadmap related to long term evolution of space missions concepts and associated operations concepts mainly but not limited to the artificial intelligence and data analytics technology branches, Spinin of interesting innovative technology, Internal Studies and Prototyping iterative development and validation of early prototypes for evaluation, using, as benchmark, realistic or real use cases. The activities will include but are not limited to design and development of innovative algorithms, models, languages, methods and techniques and shall be performed interacting when appropriate with user case providers for both requirement elicitation and prototype assessment and evaluation. Examples of recently implemented innovative technology include APSI RD4, Novelty Detection RD3, Dr.MUST RD3, webMUST RD8, Reporting RD9. Tools Development and Maintenance development and maintenance of advanced operational tools along an Agile approach. Results from studies or from requirements elicitated from potential customers may induce the process of developing tools embedding innovative technology for serving specific operations processes. Current examples include recent MUST RD7 clients, for several space missions, WebMUST RD8 project, and TECO RD6 project. Software tool development, at least, according to the tailoring type 4 of the ECSS Software Engineering Standards documented in AD4 and the sections configuration management working practice. Prototype incremental development to address requirements for specific projects, with SCRUM methodology principles RD5 and active interaction with the customer. In case of tools development AD1 and AD2 may become applicable. Maintenance activities to customers, available within the normal office hour time. On exceptional basis, e.g. requested services for LEOP, maintenance will be required outside normal working hours. Supporting the evolution of external studies e.g. GSP, TRP, GSTP studies along the entire study lifecycle as well as during the study preparation and after completion of the external study, including the following technical tasks Identification of new study subject and study feasibility assessment, Requirements elicitation and assessment, Assessing technical progress of the study e.g., participating to study reviews and progress meetings, acceptance testing validation, Prototype upgrade maintenance, Customer user services Dissemination Knowledge Retention The dissemination of achieved results in research and technology as well as in tools and applications and their operational use shall be performed through different channels and means. They include, but are not limited to, participation in target conferences, workshops, interviews and invited talks. Support to ESA Technology Transfer Office and to other entities in ESA involved with collaboration and technology transfer between space and nonspace entities. Also, production of papers, technical reports, web articles, video clips. This is a fulltime position as a Terma employee for placement at ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany, starting on 1st January 2018. Qualifications Competencies Applicants shall have a university degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline, or other suitable qualification. Essential Skills are Proven knowledge of OPSOSA systems MUST, DrMUST,WebMUST, MUSE, Novelty Detection, APSI, TECO Proven experience with Artificial intelligence and Data Analytics Excellent knowledge of the Java language, Python, JavaScript Proven experience in web and mobile applications development Proven experience of development of AI Planning and Scheduling applications Experience with Databases and Data warehousing Proven knowledge and requirements elicitation vis vis ESOCs operations engineers Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. The following experience would be an additional asset Familiarity in Spacecraft System Engineering Experience in Knowledge Engineering Experience in Agile software development methodology Familiarity with the ESOC working environment Familiarity with Robotics, Autonomy and Automation. You shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan your work and cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important. You shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies. As necessary you will be located offsite with access to ESOC technical facilities.
