Location ESRIN, Frascati, Italy Our team and mission Within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes, the Department EOP is responsible for defining and preparing future EO systems and architectures, including the investigation of new domains in Earth Observation, such as disruptive methods and technologies. More particularly, the Lab is charged to promote investment in industrial innovation within the EO domain, and develop partnerships with new actors entering the EO sector. These include EO constellation operators, startups, microcompanies, SMEs, major internet and IT companies. Within Lab, the Invest Section Lab I focusses on the EO commercial aspects. Among others, Lab I is managing the ESA InCubed programme. Whereas institutional and private European Space actors have so far created a flourishing Earth Observation EO sector in Earth Science, meteorology, environmental and security monitoring, EO market is currently undergoing a rapid transition, with new implementation approaches e.g. constellation of microsatellites, vertical integration of space borne with nonspace borne data, new industrial players e.g. IT companies, and new funding models e.g. PPP, venture capital. It is crucial for Europe to adapt to this rapidly evolving market and seize the opportunities it provides. InCubed aims at accompanying the European Economic Operators in this disruptive market evolution. Lab is designed as an open working environment which brings together ESA staff but also external space nonspace actors, innovators, data scientists, and investors on a permanent or temporary basis. This environment and the associated management will aim at rapidly prototyping and testing ideas. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Our team and mission In general, the ESA Education Office has the objective to use space as a theme to enhance the literacy and competences of young European people from primary to PhD levels in science and technology and to motivate them to pursue a STEM career, related to space in particular. The STEM Education and Outreach Unit of the ESA Education Office targets primary and secondary school teachers and students formal education through several activities aimed at supporting the teaching and learning of curricular STEM Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects. Such activities include teacher training, classroom resources and handson school projects, all using space as an inspiring and interdisciplinary overarching theme. The STEM Education and Outreach Unit also runs several activities related to informal education and outreach. In parallel, the Tertiary Education Unit of the ESA Education Office targets university students. Through its ESA Academy programme, the Tertiary Education Unit offers a number of opportunities for such students to a gain practical experience of reallife space projects and b benefit from a vast portfolio of training courses in all spacerelated disciplines, complementing their academic education. Location ESAC, Villanueva de la Caada, Spain Our team and mission Mars Express is the first European mission to Mars, launched in 2003 and still operational nowadays, the operations being coordinated by the Mars Express Science Ground Segment at ESAC, Madrid. The mission is analysing the planet at all levels from the interior up to the magnetosphere, providing very high resolution images and mineralogy information of the surface, probing the Martian subsurface waterice deposits, monitoring the atmosphere gases and its interaction with the solar wind in the magnetosphere, and even observing regularly the two Martian moons Phobos and Deimos. Additional requirements The following skills would be desirable Programming skills, especially knowledge of IDL andor Python language Experience in science data handling andor image processing Experience with servers and unix operating system Experience in educational and outreach programmes and activities Interest in planetary science The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. In addition, applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. During the interview the candidates motivation and overall professional perspectivecareer goals will also be explored.
