Post Internal Research Fellow PostDoc in Radio Navigation This post is classified F2 on the Coordinated Organisations salary scale. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Our team and mission The Radio Frequency RF Systems Division provides expert support to ESA programmes in the RF system and technology domains, which include navigation, telecommunication, Earth observation and science. It contributes to the technological development of the Agency. It runs the associated laboratory facilities and manages the associated investments. The Radio Navigation Systems and Techniques Section covers radio navigation techniques and technologies, elements and subsystems capable of generating, receiving, exploiting and analysing the signals from the current and upcoming radio navigation systems GPS, Glonass, EGNOS, Galileo, Beidou, etc., including system design tools and navigation equipment. Emphasis is placed on the engineering aspects, the GNSS system and subsystem evolution, design and technological demonstrator prototyping, and specifically on navigation system design and tools, novel navigation techniques and equipment design and prototyping, onboard receivers and formationflying RF metrology. Fields of activitiesresearch Positioning and navigation have become essential functions in everyday life for professional and massmarket usage. This leads to a continuous extension of the user base phones, wearables, watches, etc., operating environments cities, indoor, etc. and improvement of performance accuracy, resilience, power consumption, etc. The field in which the selected research fellow will focus their activities is signal processing and navigation algorithms to enhance performance and resilience of PNT PositionNavigationTiming solutions in challenging environments multipath and nonlineofsight impairments, interference, etc.. There are two main activities which could be foreseen 1 The first activity will focus on the development of algorithms, in particular navigation algorithms, to enhance the accuracy of GNSS and hybrid GNSS solutions. The main focus shall be on terrestrial users and technologies. 2 The second activity aims at developing solutions combining the latest GNSS with the latest alternative and backup PNT technologies 5G landscape, signal of opportunity incoming from LEO satcoms, etc. to achieve seamless ubiquitous accurate positioning. For the aforementioned activities, development is meant in the broadest sense, covering the design, implementation and testing of solutions e.g. testing through laboratory and field campaigns. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD. Additional requirements Previous experience in radio navigation signal processing and sensor fusion algorithm design would be an asset, as would knowledge of position estimation algorithms, signal processing and radio communications. The Research Fellow must be able to work in a team with other international investigators in a spirit of positive cooperation and, at the same time, be capable of working autonomously in hisher area of research. At the end of the fellowship, the Research Fellow will be required to summarize the work completed so that it can be included in papers to be submitted to relevant specialised conferencesjournals. The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. We are looking to supplement our very talented team in Berlin with a Constellation and Satellite Navigation Systems Specialist wm The Constellation and Satellite Navigation Systems Specialist will hold a lead technical role within KLEO, involved primarily in advanced systems architecting and design of the constellation geometry and supporting infrastructure. The successful candidate will be responsible for systems engineering tasks to support the companys development of core Navigation Systems for the satellites and ground infrastructure to support operational activities. They will actively interface between other Engineering, Regulatory and Business Development teams, as well as, external international technical partners to ensure that the system design fulfills the companys service delivery objectives respectively. Main Responsibilities Lead mission and system requirement definition and RD activities for space and ground systems necessary for managing the Constellation geometry over the full lifecycle of the satellites Launch, Commissioning, Orbit Raising, Constellation phasing, Stationkeeping, Orbit Maintenance, Collision Avoidance, Decommissioning and Deorbiting. Develop concept of operations and orbit management processes for each phase of the mission Lead the review and procure of core navigation related systems such as advanced electric propulsion, GNSS, IMU, reaction wheel systems, etc. Procure or lead development of operational software for space situation awareness SSA and coordination of collision mitigation processes Use of advanced operational engineering tools for the development and testing of satellite navigation systems Manage interfaces and project tasks among KLEO engineers and partner organizations regarding the satellite and ground system design and build for demo satellites and for the main mission Conduct systems trades analysis balancing interdisciplinary technical trades with a customerdriven focus Breakdown projects into tasks that can be supported by junior engineers Mentor junior engineers in crossdisciplinary systems to provide added redundancy for team expertise Ground Segment Engineering Support development of operation systems equipment for orbit management Space Segment Engineering Define subsystem requirements and specifications for propulsion and ADCS Support change management processes as new customer requirements emerge Support RD activities for advanced electric propulsion concepts System modelling and validation Coordination with satellite prime manufacturers Operational planning Design and implementation of control systems, operational software, and toolkits to monitor and enhance operational efficiency Develop routine operations procedures and toolsets Develop scenarios for possible failure modes, determine likely anomalous behaviors and develop operational procedures to mitigate or minimize impact of operational anomalies Coordination with other satellite operators and government agencies for SSA and collision avoidance Provide operational support for the constellation management, performing routine orbit determination, collision monitoring, maneuver planning and anomaly support. This role will require occasional UK and European travel. The successful candidate will need to gain UK Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs. Perform mission analysis and flight dynamics calculations in order to define and operate missions from Earth centred to interplanetary missions.
