Job description For our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an experienced Earth Observation Data Processing Systems Engineer. You will work within the Data Processing Systems and Applications Competence Area of the SEP Division to assist in the specification, preliminary design, procurement, integration, testing and transfer to operations of Data Processing elements for future programmes under development. Support is envisaged primarily in the context of MTG programme but you may be also assigned to similar tasks in the context of other programmes. Ground Segment data processing elements cover the complete data processing chain for all mission instruments, from processing of raw data received from the satellites to generation of Level 1 and Level 2 products via dedicated instrument data processors and their distribution to other Ground Segment elements for archiving and dissemination. This also includes the processing infrastructure required for hosting, coordinating, monitoring and controlling the Level 1 and Level 2 instrument data processors. Responsibilities You will provide engineering support to the MTG Ground Segment Data processing team in the frame of the MTG Programme. You will support activities related to Phases C and D of the MTG Programme in the area of data processing engineering. In detail, support will be provided for the following tasks Support the procurement of data processing elements by advising on technical solutions proposed by the contractor and by reviewing documentation to confirm its compliance with the requirements Support management of the requirements baseline for data processing elements Support refinement of ICD and HumanMachine Interface HMI requirements and specifications Support testing, integration and acceptance of data processing elements, including HMIs Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings In addition, there will be regular involvement in the following tasks requiring interaction and coordination with other teams at System and Ground Segment level Review of System, Space Segment and Ground Segment documentation dealing with requirements, concepts, algorithms and technical analyses of relevance for data processing, including review of instrument data processing algorithms and calibration concepts defined by the Space Segment with emphasis on their implications on Ground Segment data processing concepts, interfaces and architecture in the course of which prototyping of algorithms and production of test data may be required Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings at System and Ground Segment level Review of documentation dealing with technical evolutions of the EUMETSAT infrastructure This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date ASAP. You will be based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a University degree or equivalent, including experience in the engineering, physics, or software or similar domains you shall have the following mandatory attributes, skills, and experience Relevant experience in preparation of requirements, design, interfaces including HMI and testing documentation for data processing systems considering the systems engineering aspects of data processing management and data provision experience on data processing for high data rates Earth Observation missions will be considered an asset Relevant experience in monitoring and implementation of designs against requirement baselines and IVV, including running HMI workshops, testing and formal acceptance The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. This ability must be exercised within a multidisciplinary context in cooperation with other teams, covering several different data processing levels and instruments Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of MTG. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context Systematic approach to work, be able to plan the work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation The working language for the position is English and therefore the person must be able to work effectively in this language. Within the group discipline Planning Scheduling, you will be responsible and accountable for the project scheduling preparation and reporting for one or several typically up to 3 projects of Earth Observation, Navigation and Science programmes line. Earth Observation Image Processing Engineer for Satellite Applications

The post consists in the development of components and applications that extract features from satellite and aerial imagery, features that will be used in GIS applications like 3D urban mapping, change detection, objects counting. The engineer will be in charge of designing and developing image processing tools used in Earth Observation applications in different domains. Occasionally the engineer may have to support technically the business development team for activities related to image processing. Primarily, the engineer will be involved in a RD project that aims to extract features from multiple high resolution satellite images 75 cm. The goal is to automatically extract information from the image to update urban maps in a middle east country. The role will focus on extracting road networks and to use existing tools and stereo images to build a 3D map. The tools will be integrated as prototype into a GIS application used by governmental bodies. The project will exploit preexisting algorithms in the context of applications with real practical benefits. As a full automatic process might not be possible, the challenge will be to consider the human factor in the design of the processing chain. The efficiency of the processing chain will be assessed on its whole, including the efficiency of the endusers. It means that the tools have to be defined in a way that makes the human task easy but attractive enough to maintain motivation and concentration. In this particular project, the engineer will be responsible for 1 Supporting the design of the full processing chain including the human factor 2 Designing and developing the features extraction algorithms based on existing tools 3 Writing the documentation that describes the tools design document, user manual... The engineer will work in a small SCRUM Deimos team 35 people, depending on the period with a certified SCRUM master. Some of the tools will be developed using IDLENVI, but the specifications could change depending on the engineer suggestions.
