Europes Metrological Satellite Agency EUMETSAT develops and operates a system of satellites that continually observe the land, atmosphere and oceans, providing data that enhances and safeguards the lives of European citizens. We are looking for someone to join us as a Software and Data Formats Engineer. This is an attractive opportunity offering variety and scope for development. In this role you will provide engineering support to data formatting services both for EUMETSATs satellite systems as well as satellites operated by other agencies and regional data retransmission services. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining state of the art knowledge related to data formats and you will be the internal point of contact in this area for other departments within the organisation. You will have the opportunity to actively contribute in the evolution of community standard data formats, specifically netCDF and HDF, with occasional travel to the US to attend symposiums on the subject. To be successful you should have a relevant degree or equivalent , as well as experience in each of the following areas Expert knowledge of data formats used in meteorological satellite data processing and exchange, including at least WMO formats BUFR, GRIB, netCDF and HDF. Expert knowledge of further format standards used in remote sensing would be of advantage Experience in the development and maintenance of operational software in C or C in a UNIX environment Experience in specifying software deliverables Ability to define and carry out rigorous testing of new software Good interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to apply these within a team environment Experience of operating within a matrix environment with multiple internal and external interfaces Experience in working with or for a software service provision company. Experience in the area of meteorological satellite product processing, reformatting andor visualisation software will be considered an advantage.
