Open ended About the role STFCs RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of worldclass space research and technology development. Weve had significant involvement in over 210 space missions and operate at the forefront of UK Space Research. RAL Space is leading the technical development of the payload for the ARIEL space mission, a major ESA Mclass science mission M4 for launch in 2028 to study the atmospheres of exoplanets. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. We are seeking an outstanding technical leader to join the team as the systems engineering lead engineering manager for the payload consortium consisting of teams in institutes and industries in 15 countries. You will work with the engineering teams at RAL, throughout the UK and in partner organisations around Europe to define, design, develop, build and test the payload consisting of a 1mclass space telescope, photometer and infrared spectrometer instruments and associated electronic and cryogenic systems. The successful candidate will be able play a key role in the project from the current phase B definition phase through to launch and commissioning of the spacecraft. As a Senior Systems Engineer your responsibilities will include engineering leadership of the distributed systems engineering team centred at RAL but with members from the major consortium partners in UK, Italy, France, Belgium, Spain Poland payloadspacecraft interface management and be the lead technical interface with ESA and the spacecraft Primes leading the requirement definition and flow down process management of detailed design activities detailed project work in planning, executing and reporting of tests, commissioning, verification, calibration activities commissioning and operation of space hardware coordination and supervision of team commissioning and operation of Ground Support Equipment possible preparation of proposals for future lines of work investigate future ideas for payload and missions with academic and industrial partners management of significant work packages andor small projects line management of junior members of staff within the systems engineering group This role offers regular contact with external stakeholder and customers such as space agencies and industrial partners, a variety of space engineering and scientific support staff and senior management at institutes around the world, as well as the opportunity to discuss projects with members of the public and the press. You will get to undertake travel to partner organisations in Europe and North America and have the opportunity to present your work at conferences and meetings. This role can be full time or part time minimum 25 hours. About you You will have an undergraduate degree in Engineering or Physics or equivalent experience as well as dedicated systems engineering or engineering leadership experience on space mission or scientific instrument development projects. You will also demonstrate expertise in at least one technical domain of mechanical, thermal including cryogenic, optical or electrical system design and analysis and working knowledge of other domains experience in multiple projects throughout lifecycle experience making recommendations to collaborators and subject matter experts experience with design andor analysis software tools experience of scientific instrument testing ground, suborbital or orbital experience of working with or within consortia of institutes or industries space project experience experience in managing the spacecraftpayload interfaces. More particularly, the Lab is charged to promote investment in industrial innovation within the EO domain, and develop partnerships with new actors entering the EO sector. These include EO constellation operators, startups, microcompanies, SMEs, major internet and IT companies. Within Lab, the Invest Section Lab I focusses on the EO commercial aspects. Among others, Lab I is managing the ESA InCubed programme.
