Polyester Chain Prices: PX, PTA, MEG and Fiber Prices (Weekly Report)

Polyester intermediate prices have moved into different directions in the last days in China where PTA prices were this Monday recovering after paraxylene prices have bottomed out. The rise of crude oil prices is now supporting the polyester chain with fiber prices staying currently frozen, due to a lack of demand from spinners and filament weavers. Our weekly report covers the polyester chain in Asia, including PX (paraxylene), PTA (purified terephthalic acid), MEG (mono-ethylene glycol), polyester chips, and polyester staple and filament prices. Textile fiber prices could decline in the coming months, being negatively affected by very poor apparel sales at retail, amid a global economic slowdown. Cotton futures have already dropped this week in New York and polyester chain prices have begun decreasing in the Far East. Other petrochemical fibers could follow the same downward path. Viscose prices have stayed frozen in the past weeks in China, being still in holiday mood in the current period. VSF prices have confirmed their decline in 2018 after they have begun to drop by early 2017, as reflected by our 5-year chart.
