The Mars Express orbiter started science observations in January 2004, and since then it has been delivering an incredible amount of scientific results. Routine operations of Mars Express are supported at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, by a dedicated team of spacecraft operations engineers and a combined team of spacecraft controllers shared with Rosetta and Venus Express mission. The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Spacecraft Operations Engineer SOE to join the Mars Express Mission Control Team at ESOC in Darmstadt to provide support primarily for Mission Planning operations and operational software tools. As an SOE, you will typically perform the following tasks necessary for planning Mars Express spacecraft operations in Mars orbit Contribute to the generation of routine mission planning products Contribute to the process of the mediumterm planning cycle in interaction with the Flight Dynamics staff, and with the other Flight Control SOEs for spacecraft preservation Support the interfaces of mission planning within ESOC, with the Science Operations Centre, part of the ESAC Science Ground Segment, and with the scientific community Contribute to the development andor maintenance of mission planning tools specification and validation of externallyprocured tools programming for evolution of internal tools Follow up anomalies, test upgrades and new configurations of the Mission Planning tools Contribute to streamlining of the planning and commanding workflow in support to the automation of mission operations. In addition, you will also be expected to contribute to the following other flight operations Contribute to onboard software OnBoard Control Procedures improvement, validation and management, in coordination with the on board Data handling engineers Perform checking and loading of routine operations products to the spacecraft, on a rotation basis Support spacecraft anomaly resolution or implementation of operational workarounds Contribute to documentation and reporting of mission operations Provide oncall support for spacecraft and mission planning Provide engineering and operations support for designated payload or platform elements Assist the Chief Mission Planner and or Spacecraft Operations Manager in adapting operations planning and concepts, if required by mission e evolution. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date from May to June 2013. The duration of the position is linked to the mission duration, which is at least until the end 2014, plus a mission extension until end 2016 likely to be approved in 2013. Your Qualifications Suitable candidates should hold a university degree in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering or scientific subject and preferably have some experience in spacecraft operations, mission planning or space science. Candidates should be systemsminded and have a good understanding of general space mission constraints data, power, attitude, thermal etc.. Some experience of spacecraft operations, mission planning or On Board Control Procedures would be an advantage. Candidates should be able to work independently, reliably and according to schedule for the set of planning products they will regularly be assigned to process. Capability to manage and operate planning processes and tools in a systematic and configurationcontrolled manner is mandatory together with the will to learn in detail all tools and possibilities of a complex planning system. Candidates should have a good level of computer skills and some experience with UNIX andor Linux operating systems. Good knowledge and practical experience of Java would be of significant advantage. The candidates shall have interest to maintain and improve the custom planning tools Java, but also ML, PERL, UNIX scripts. Proficiency with mathematical packages e.g. MatLab, SciLab would be an advantage. Fluent written and spoken English is required. The Mission Our customer, ESA, develops ground software systems for supporting the spacecraft mission operations at its operations centre, ESOC, in Darmstadt, Germany. ESOC requires qualified software development, test and validation engineers to support the development of spacecraft mission control systems and operational spacecraft simulators. Such engineers support ESA staff in the process of developing and maintaining the operational systems in use, for example by supporting the definition the specifications, supporting formal validation of developed systems, and assisting end users, such as spacecraft operators, in utilizing the systems. The Challenge We are looking for software engineers to support development, test and validation of ESOC mission control systems and operational simulators. The engineers will have experience of Operational Mission Control Systems Operational Simulator Systems Mission Planning Systems ESOCs family of software infrastructure products. Engineers will be responsible for the definition, implementation, acceptance and maintenance of mission control systems. The following main tasks are involved Specification of the software requirements of these systems in collaboration with the operational users Definition and specification of their internal and external interfaces Acceptance of the deliverables received from industry, ensuring correctness, completeness and compliance to the applicable requirements Support to the mission operations staff as required in the various operational phases, including System Validation Tests, simulation campaigns and in software support coordination as part of the Flight Control Team during critical operational phases such as launches Coordination with other internal ESOC or external units, e.g. with the unit supplying mission data systems infrastructure and with the unit supplying the IT systems and services Participation in research and development activities in the area of mission data systems. The work will be performed at the ESOC premises in Darmstadt, Germany. This is a fulltime position as a Terma employee for a placement at ESOC, with a planned starting date in April 2013. Since being launched in 2005, operations of Venus Express have been performed at ESOC in Darmstadt by a dedicated team of spacecraft operations engineers and a combined team of spacecraft controllers shared with Rosetta and Mars Express missions. The Venus Express mission has been extended until end of 2014, with a potential further extension into 2015 being considered. All spacecraft platform and backup subsystems are in good health. The mission is very dynamic in spite of being in routine phase, with multiple special operations such as the quadratures, solar conjunctions and lately the aerodrag experiments. The team will be challenged with demanding tasks in the next years ground segment obsolescence migrations, operations automation a possibly preparing and implementing the first European aerobraking operations to be decided in June 2013. The Challenge We are looking for two Spacecraft Operations Engineers SOE to join the SOE to join the Venus Express Mission Control Team located at ESOC to support primarily the following subsystems Power Thermal Subsystems Telemetry and Telecommanding Subsystem TTC The SOE will work within the VEX Flight Control Team FCT under the direct management of the VEX Spacecraft Operations Manager. The Power and Thermal SOE will Take prime responsibility of the platform Power and Thermal subsystems and backup responsibility of at least one spacecraftground subsystems AOCS, Data Handling, TTC, Payload instrument, Mission Control System, Simulator or Mission Planning. The TTC SOE will Take prime responsibility of the platform Power and Thermal subsystems, and backup responsibility of at least one spacecraftground subsystems AOCS, Data Handling, TTC, Payload instrument, Mission Control System, Simulator or Mission Planning Coordinate TTC operations with relevant Ground Operations Engineers and Flight Dynamics, in particular for Radio Science and DeltaDOR activities. Both SOEs will Work with the VEX Mission Planning System including the generation of long, medium and short term planning products on rotation shifts every 5 to 6 weeks approximately Work, and be on call, as operations engineer supervising operations conduction one week every 5 to 6 weeks approximately Write and maintain operational procedures using MOIS and reports Operate the VEX Mission Control System based on SCOS 2000 to monitor and control spacecraft operations Be assertive, communicative and able to work in a team in a multinational environment Be able to learn new skills and adapt to the VEX operations environment within 23 months Be able to actively participate in the relevant technical meetings and teleconferences. It is expected that the candidates will have experience in spacecraft operations. The SOE will be subject to a short training for about 23 months. The aim is that after this training, heshe can be assigned as planner and engineer on duty as well as back up SOE for a subsystem and an instrument . This is a fulltime position. The start date is as soon as possible, latest May 2013. Software Engineers for the EPS Data and Product Processing Facilities MF

The mission As members of the SEP LEO Mission Data Processing Operational Applications maintenance team, the Key Persons shall support the maintenance and evolution of the EPS Ground Segment, specifically the FEP and PGF facilities and provide support to the development and integration of new PPF. The FEP and PGF application software is mainly developed in C and a good experience in C is therefore mandatory. For the PPF support knowledge of C will be needed in addition. The Key Persons duties will include a range of tasks, from the support of the day to day operation and maintenance, the analysis, design, development and testing of the facilities which also includes the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures as well as the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. In support to operations, the Key Persons may also be required to provide on call support as part of a team of maintenance engineers. Besides the above described routine tasks, the Key Persons will also be expected to contribute to design and system engineeringreengineering activities in the field of science data processing that will become necessary for existing and future production systems. Typically the tasks will include 1. Contribute to the definition and design of architectures of data processing ground segments and their components, their interfaces, and the validation and verification methods. 2. Monitor the detailed design and implementation of new system software components by industrial contractors and perform the acceptance of externally developed components. 3. Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include 3.1 Upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms and products for the EPS instrument suite, e.g. for ASCAT, ATOVS and AVHRR processing, including rationalising common data processing components such as software libraries to reduce cost. 3.2 Maintenance and development of the FEP and PGF software it should be noted that the first line maintenance is being performed by EUMETSAT in conjunction with the industrial contractor the second line maintenance is being performed by the industrial contractor under supervision and with support from EUMETSAT and it entails in particular Contribution to FEPPGF system design and reengineering Support to the development and implementation of FEP and PGF tools and script 4. Support to procurement activities for maintenance and evolution activities as described under point 3. 5. Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as 5.1 Support to Configuration Management, building and distribution of FEPPGF software releases and patches 5.2 Support to the development, integration and configuration management of software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing 5.3 Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. 5.4 Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies 5.5 Perform SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected. 5.6 Analysis of the maintenance requirements and identification, procurement or implementation of the tools required to fulfil them 5.7 Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, 5.8 Support to the procurement and installation of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of support services 5.9 Participation in technical meetings and formal reviews. Profile In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key Persons shall have experience in SW development, configuration controlled software build environments, experience with the operation, maintenance or trouble shooting of large, complex, realtime data processing systems. The Key Persons shall have a minimum of 3 years work experience in UNIX application development and testing in C, C. The Key Persons should possess very good communication, presentation and team working skills and be able to cope with very high workloads. An ability to adapt to a rapidly changing, often stressful environment and retain a system overview is also essential.
