Data Processing System Engineer

We are looking for a Systems and Applications Engineer, who will support the Processing Applications Engineering team at EUMETSAT, Darmstadt. You will be challenged with a large variety of tasks supporting the routine operations of GEO and LEO Earth Observation mission as well as the operations preparation of furtue missions. Responsibilities Duties At our customer EUMETSAT you will be tasked with the maintenance and evolution of the facilities and systems of different Earth Observation missions such as the EUMETSAT Polar System EPS, Jason, or Meteosat Second Generation MSG. This includes a wide range of tasks, from the support of the daytoday operations and maintenance, to the handling of anomalies, upgrades and configuration changes for these facilities. Tasks will also contain the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures. You will also be the technical interface to external contractors. In detail your work will include Maintenance and development of the Data Processing Systems Application Software Procurement activities for maintenance and evolution activities Definition and design of architectures of data processing ground segments and their components, interfaces, and the validation verification methods Coordination Inputs to planning and preparation of releases Coordination with other teams in and outside of EUMETSAT Generation and maintenance of technical baseline documentation Support the operations Qualifications Experience Who are we looking for? you have a university degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as IT, Astrophysics, Physics, Meteorology, etc.. You love to code. You are used to challenge large, UNIX LINUX based, complex, realtime data processing systems. You know how to specify their requirements and design, how to maintain them. Essential Skills You have proven experience in CC coding You are used to work with scripting languages such as PERL, shell, etc. You know how to work with software building environments and tools e.g. IBM XL C and GCC compilers, make, automake, autoconf, RPM You have gained very good technical writing skills You have already been working on requirements specification and design documentation, test plan procedures, and maintenance procedures You are experienced in using source code control systems e.g. Subversion, Git Analysing, debugging, profiling, fixing and processing of software anomalies are your hobby You are able to work effectively in English. Your Tasks The engineer shall support the MTG System engineering team. The engineer will support activities related to Phase CD followed by Phase E of the MTG Programme covering the engineering approach and means for MTG System performance, analysis in support of verification, validation and commissioning activities. In detail, the support will be provided for the following tasks Support the process to elucidate the needs for engineering tools to support offline analysis of the MTG system outputs, through interactions with the scientific, instrument, operations and testing user communities, including analysis of challenging or unclear technical aspects Support the translation of scientific and other needs into tool specification and design information, and the regular refinement and maintenance of the engineering tools baseline, including up keeping of the corresponding Engineering Tool Register ETR Support the planning and scheduling of the engineering tools development and testing activities taking into account the user needs milestones Support the development programming and testing of the engineering tools, including their integration within the targeted offline framework also handling of problem report, improvement requests and deliveries following the relevant MTG processes Support the promotion and induction of the engineering tools into the ETR user community training, handson sessions Contribute to the coordination of the user communities and to the reporting on the engineering toolset status Contribution to the maintenance of the technical budgets Participation in formal reviews and technical meetings. Your Profile In addition to having a University degree or equivalent, including experience in the engineering, physics or software or similar domains the key person shall have the following mandatory attributes, skills and experience Relevant experience in preparation of specification, design, interfaces and testing documentation for data analysis systems experience of Earth Observation missions is desirable but is not mandatory considering the systems engineering aspects of data analysis management and tools provision Relevant experience in implementation of analysis software script against specification design baselines. Integration, Verification Validation, including testing and formal acceptance The ability to maintain a system overview is essential. This ability shall be exercised within a multidisciplinary context in cooperation with other teams, e.g. covering several different data processing levels and instruments Ability to learn and develop the needed skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of MTG. This includes the ability to rapidly absorb, and make use of, information presented in written and oral communications in a dynamic context Systematic approach to work, including the ability to plan the work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Desirable Skills and Experience Previous experience and knowledge in any of the following areas will be considered an additional asset Knowledge of programming languages or tools for data anaylsis e.g. Python, MatLab Relevant experience with data analysis for Earth Observation missions Level 0 raw data, Level 1 geolocated instrument science data or Level 2 physical information, either related to specification and development or to operations and maintenance Experience with generation and use of well formatted files e.g. netCDF format, binary format Knowledge of task relevant ECSS and CCSDS standards. Location ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands Description Working in the Copernicus Sentinel3 Project Division, Earth Observation Projects Department, Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes and reporting to the Sentinel3 Project Manager, the Mission, System and Operations Manager will be responsible for the overall analysis, specification and implementation of the Sentinel 3 system and mission requirements, as well as for the preparation for its operations during all phases up to and including inorbit commissioning and support to the routine operational elements. This includes all development and validation activities related to onboard software. Duties maintaining and possibly updating the Sentinel3 system definition including space segment and level1 data processing, launch vehicle, flight operations segment, payload data segment and other external elements and associated Mission Analysis monitoring the missionrelated industrial work to ensure the performance of all satellite functional chains is suitable for the mission verifying that requirements are met coherently and costeffectively ensuring that the definition of missionspecific elements is properly maintained, updated and validated in liaison with the Payload Data Ground Segment PDGS and Flight Operations Segment FOS coordinators and other relevant teams within ESA and with external partners e.g. Eumetsat, CNES technical responsibility for aspects related to onboard software development and validation establishing a coherent Satellite System Validation Test SSVT programme for the purpose of combined satelliteground segment operations verification and coordinating its implementation monitoring, with Payload Manager support, the endtoend data flow from geophysical parameters, through the instruments and satellite systems up to the final data products, ensuring availability of all required models and tools organising the resolution of inorbit anomalies involving appropriate expert support establishing, in cooperation with the FOS and PDGS, the Launch Early Orbit Phase LEOP and the inflight satellite commissioning and verification coordinating together with the PDGS and relevant parties e.g. CNES for the topographic mission the instrument and level1 product verification CalVal activities during the commissioning phase maintaining, updating and controlling, from the satellite systems point of view, the interfaces to the ground segment elements involved in operating the satellite or processing the provided data ensuring, with the Engineering AIV Manager, suitable commonality between AIT Operations procedures and databases liaising, in combination with the Payload Manager, with the Mission Science Division for the maintenance and evolution of highlevel mission requirements liaising closely with other project sections to ensure a consistent approach to satellite procurement, verification, launch and inorbit operations preparations supporting the general project reporting tasks monthly, QSR and other Departmentlevel support activities as required. Additional requirements In performing these duties, the Mission, System and Operations Manager will lead a section of engineers and will liaise closely with the other sections of the project and with other relevant Copernicus entities. Furthermore, he will constitute the main interface point between the ESA Sentinel3 Project and EUMETSAT for the implementation of the ESAEUMETSAT Sentinel3 cooperation agreement. The post holder will be supported by a team of engineers shared among the Copernicus Space Component and by specialized engineering support from the Directorate of Technical and Quality Management.
