ispace Europe is seeking a highly motivated and talented engineer to design mechanical accommodations for payloads on ispaces lunar landers and rovers. About ispace ispace is a private lunar exploration company whose vision is to expand and sustain humanitys presence in space by utilizing resources available on the Moon. ispace was a Google Lunar XPRIZE finalist and its 4kg SORATO rover won the XPRIZE mobility milestone award. In addition to rovers, ispace is developing lunar landers with two missions already scheduled for launch in 2020 and 2021. ispace Europe is the companys regional office located in Luxembourg, the heart of Europe. We are developing the next rover missions that will prospect for lunar water and thereby set the first milestone toward lunar insitu resource utilisation ISRU. ispace Europes core engineering competencies are in lunar science and ISRU, rover navigation, mission planning, data processing, and mission systems engineering. We are a diverse and growing team, motivated by the challenges of the Lunar Frontier, and determined to achieve the companys vision. Role Description The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design of the mechanical payload interfaces on ispace Europe rover missions. The position requires strong capabilities in structural and mechanical engineering as well as a solid understanding of thermal engineering discipline. It is a unique opportunity to design and assemble oneofakind planetary systems meant to explore the most challenging environments on the Moon. You will collaborate with ispace engineering experts in Japan, Europe, and the US. We rely on every engineer to exhibit a crossfunctional mindset, intellectual curiosity, willingness to bridge gaps, appreciation for process, and understanding of the system two levels up and two levels down. The candidate must be selfdriven, continuously selfimproving, and proud of herhis work. Key Responsibilities Produce integrated thermal and mechanical solutions for combined payloadrover systems and landers fixed payloads Coordinate configuration design studies between the instrument partners and rover team in Japan Translate lunar environmental constraints e.g. properties of lunar regolith and behavior of lunar volatiles into mechanical requirements on the future design of robotic systems, such as penetrators and sampling handling systems Collaborate with other engineering experts for efficient packaging of instruments and subsystems Develop detailed hardware fabrication drawings assembly instructions Support procurement of mechanical components Define approach and levels for environmental testing Develop and test breadboard and prototype solutions Support business team with quick sizing and scaling of structural systems Coach the ispace Europe engineering and business teams on anything mechanical Travel occasionally to Japan and to instrument provider locations Required Skills and Qualifications Hold MS with 3 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering Has Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing GDT Experienced with the design and simulation of composite materials Is knowledgeable about structural analysis, material selection, and fabrication processes for spaceflight hardware Has extensive experience with Solidworks, FEmap or equivalent software packages and capabilities with Thermal Desktop or equivalent Exhibit sound judgment and deep understanding of systemlevel impact of design choices Be highly organized and capable of planning and executing complex technical work Thrive in multidisciplinary environment in close cooperation with engineering and business teams Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills Show initiative, teamwork, and positive cando attitude Be comfortable with change and fastpaced environment Preferred Experience Experienced with additive manufacturing techniques for prototyping andor flight manufacturing Be knowledgeable of space environmental tests Has experience with small spacecraft design and integration
